Workshop on Risk Assessment of Nanomaterials and Materials Containing Small/Nanoparticles in the Food and Feed Chain

This workshop represented a milestone of the engagement plan that aimed in updating EFSA's guidance on nanomaterials and small/nano particles risk assessment within the food and feed chain. In response to the identified challenges in implementing the 2021 EFSA guidance documents, the event provided a space for discussing key scientific aspects, enhancing harmonization across scientific and regulatory frameworks, and exchanging views among various stakeholders. Attended by over 50 in‐person and more than 250 online participants, the event featured two sessions. Session 1 provided an overview of existing frameworks, including insights from EU agencies and international bodies, highlighting the need for alignment and updated guidance to reflect scientific advancements. Session 2 facilitated discussions on technical aspects, such as physico‐chemical characterization, toxicological testing, and risk assessment methodologies. Major topics included the integration of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), addressing challenges in sample preparation, and the acceptance of historical data. Emphasizing the importance of cooperation, the workshop called for flexible yet adapted approaches to ensure industry compliance and effective risk assessments. Concluding the event, EFSA committed to refining guidance to align with scientific progress and stakeholder feedback, fostering collaboration to enhance regulatory processes. Future steps include prioritizing international collaboration and facilitating exchange channels with stakeholders to support effective nanoscale assessment along the risk assessment process.
