THE NOAEL PROJECT

The No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL)  is a toxicological parameter representing the highest exposure level at which there are no statistically or biologically significant increases in the frequency or severity of adverse effects between the exposed population and its appropriate control.
The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) now considers NOAEL as the standard requirement in the safety assessment of substances used in cosmetic products. A NOAEL value is indeed essential in order to calculate the Margin of Safety (MOS), that is the ratio bewteen NOAEL and the Systemic Exposure Dose (SED). A MOS under a score of 100 means the substance not safe for being used in cosmetic products.
To address the strong necessity of a database storing solid NOAEL values, we created this website where users that have joined the project can check and download NOAELs found in international peer reviewed journals or databases.
In our toxicological datasheeet we provide all the available information needed for MOS calculation and, if possible, for SED calculation.
